In MahaVastu, zones are linked with the five elements: water, fire, earth, air and space. The kitchen is where fire is used every day, which is why its placement gets particular attention in any home consultation.

The preferred zone

The South-East is traditionally associated with the fire element, and it is the preferred zone for the kitchen, and especially for the cooking stove. When fire sits in a fire zone, that part of the space is considered to be in balance.

What matters is not only where the kitchen is, but where the flame actually sits.

When the kitchen is elsewhere

Many homes, particularly flats, have kitchens in other zones. This is common, and it does not mean the kitchen has to be rebuilt. What matters is which zone the stove actually sits in, what it is in conflict with, and how that can be balanced.

Fire and water

Fire and water are opposing elements. A stove placed directly beside the sink or water purifier is one of the most common points raised in a kitchen analysis. Even a small separation, or a change in what sits between them, can help.

Things worth checking in your own kitchen

  • Where the stove sits within the kitchen, not just where the kitchen is
  • Whether the stove and the sink or water purifier are right next to each other
  • The colours used in the kitchen and in the zone around it
  • Whether the kitchen shares a wall with a toilet

Remedies, not renovation

Corrections are usually practical: moving the stove within the kitchen, separating fire and water, or using specific colours and materials to balance the zone. A consultation identifies which changes matter for your home, and in what order to make them.

In short

  • The South-East is the preferred zone for the kitchen and the stove.
  • A kitchen in another zone can usually be balanced without rebuilding.
  • Keep fire and water apart where you can.
